Required Whakapapa

Under the current Trust Deed, beneficiaries of Te Runanga o Ngati Whare Iwi Trust are those persons who can whakapapa to the eponymous ancestor Wharepakau and also to one of the traditionally recognised Ngati Whare hapu. These hapu are:

  • Ngati Tuahiwi
  • Ngati Kohiwi
  • Ngati Te Karaha
  • Ngai Te Au
  • Ngati Hamua ki Te Whaiti
  • Ngati Whare ki Nga Potiki
  • Ngati Mahanga
  • Warahoe ki Te Whaiti

However, for registration purposes you simply need to name a Ngati Whare tipuna who you claim descent from. Preferably this tipuna will be a grandparent or great-grandparent alive in the early decades of the twentieth century (or indeed a more distant ancestor).

One useful source of Ngati Whare is the list of owners put together for Te Whaiti block in 1907 and added to in 1913. If you are able, you should identify the tipuna on these lists from whom you whakapapa.

It should be noted, however, that these lists are not comprehensive. A number of Ngati Whare were missed off the lists and sometimes things happen, such as a person being known by a different name. In any case, your whakapapa will be checked by Te Runanga o Ngati Whare Iwi Trust in consultation with Ngati Whare kaumatua and whakapapa experts.
