In 1976 most of the lands remaining to Ngati Whare after an earlier period of aggressive (and often illegal) Crown purchases, were amalgamated together into a block for the purpose of leasing the land to the New Zealand Forest Service. The resulting Te Whaiti-nui-a-Toi block contains some 7,777 acres, of which 4,983 acres were put under lease. Today the block is owned by around 1,850 beneficial owners, of which about 80 are "whanau trusts", each of which represents a significant number of Ngati Whare.
Te Whaiti-nui-a-Toi block has its own, independent organisational structure separate from Te Runanga o Ngati Whare Iwi Trust, with its own trustees elected by the beneficial owners. The present trustees are Andrew Te Amo (Chairman), Ben Taylor, Douglas Rewi, Jack Ohlson, and Whare Akuhata.
