Ngati Whare Treaty Settlement

Ngati Whare is one of the eight Central North Island (CNI) iwi who have recently joined together in a collective to achieve settlement with the Crown over the Crown Forest Licence Lands.

Aside from the CNI Forests Iwi Collective Settlement, Ngati Whare have their own individual settlement negotiations with the Crown to complete. These negotiations include the drafting of a Crown Apology, an agreed Historical Account, Cultural Redress, and potentially additional Commercial Redress.

CNI Forests Iwi Collective Settlement Reached - Iwi Endorsement Sought

On 24 April 2008 Ngati Whare and other iwi of the Central North Island reached an Agreement in Principle with the Crown for the settlement of all claims relating to the Crown Forest Licence lands.

Ngati Whare is now seeking ratification and endorsement of this deal from Ngati Whare iwi members. A series of Information Hui have been held around the motu, and voting and information packs have been posted to all Ngati Whare.

A hui-a-iwi was held at Murumurunga Marae on 14 June 2004, which was also the final day for Ngati Whare members to place their postal ballot.

The most recent hui-a-iwi was held on 2 May 2009 at Murumurunga Marae. The hui was held to update Ngati Whare members on the current negotiations with the Crown as well as other related issues.
